How the world makes sense
First NFC Supermarket to open in Denmark
October 30th, 2011 | Dennis Nielsen
NFC, short for Near Field Communication, is not very common in Denmark, however a new supermarket based in Copenhagen wants to change this.
NFC Danmark, wants to launch the world’s first NFC supermarket, where consumers can buy products with their phone. In this new supermarket, consumers will be able to buy goods by taking a large picture of the product, with incorporated NFC-chip, and then receive it later at home.
The idea stems from Korea, where Tesco have made created a similar concept, because of lack of space, however with QR/2D codes. The problem with QR/2D is depicting the right code in bad lighting. This is where NFC has its biggest advantage, because of the special information chip. Nokia has together with Google are investing heavily in NFC-technology and two Danish supermarket chains have already shown interest in the project.
In reality, the Danish supermarket will utilize the same QR/2D technology as Tesco till the NFC-technology is incorporated in most smartphones. The shop will functions as posters placed around business environments. I can’t wait to see this stuff in action.
On a last-minute side note, 7-Eleven is introducing smart deals, which is shopping system where you can buy products through Facebook on you phone, and the show the receipt at the store and get you product.
